F1 1979 - Round 9 - Great Britain Reports
#1
Guys, sorry: I f***ed up at the start!
I overtook two cars by the 2nd corner and thought I was clear. I clearly was't. There was a third car. I moved to the left. I shouldn't have moved.
Extremely sorry to all those -and there were quite a few - who's race was badly affected because of my error.

Qual could not match my PB and ended 13th yuk
Race managed to miss first race mess and was doing ok but I wore out the left rear really fast and made a mental error and had to pit for repairs went to hard rears had heavy fuel and that didn't help. Now the car was really slow and hard to make laps so messed up a few more times. Then getting lapped I missed the last car (Shannon) and I messed him up so very sorry. Bad bad race for me.
Good job DeeCee

Firstly im really sorry Tobias i thought there would be room for me to follow ED through but there wasn't so my fault man sorry
as for the race i qualified better than i thought but as usual messed up the start if there was points for messing up the start id be right up there. after that i felt like i had good pace but then a freeze followed by a spin and it all went south from then on. i hit the wall on pit entry and then took on 12 laps of fuel to many so just settled for what i could get not sure how i managed 5th with the class of the field here but well happy for that and even more happy that my team mate could be there great points man Smile
See you all at the next race be safe and well all big thanks to our admins you do a great job for us. Much appreciated Smile

It was a great evening for me: a proper race after two and a half years.
Many things I dont remember and starting to know again-like sending and receiving setups lol.

I had some good practice last week, though my lap times didnt show it, all I could do was 11 and 1/2 but I was confident I would do whole race without a major mistake but alas I did it.
I spun at t1, tried to get out of the way, but mr. Gary Roth who aparently followed close, hit me and we both ended at the pits with major damage, 60 seconds worth.
Im very sorry mr. Roth, only thing that made me feel better is that you came out of the pits in front of me.
The rest of the race I battled with Roth, I made mistakes he made mistakes, at the end he did the decisive and I finished race in front of him.

Not only I had a satisfying race, but it seems Bruce (who was obviously unprepared for the race) and me found an opponent we can battle at next races.

Once again JPS and I were very close in qualifying. This time managing to get the pole. My first of the season Smile.
Sitting on the grid wishing I didn't as my car was on the none rubbed side. Looking over to JPS car, he was sat on the black stuff. For this, and as expected, he had the better start and got in the lead with me in tow.
I could keep up with him no problem, but to try to overtake was hard as the car just loses downforce when near the back of him. This was also the same when following backmarkers, which I will tell you about below.
After a number of laps he made a mistake in the last corners on the track. When I got close and try to go around him I spun the car. Lost 5 seconds., but lost no places. Tried to gain that time back but was keep finding backmarkers in the wrong parts of the track and the gap just was not getting smaller.

Did my first pit, all ok. Had to battle and overtake drivers that were only doing 1 pitstops. Lost more time on JP doing this.
Then disaster happened, I come across a backmarker going slow through the 1st corner not giving way to blue flags, I spun my car again. Lost lots of time, and had to re overtake all the cars that I had just overtook. I even had Ed behind me for company.

2nd pitstop, not so good. I locked up slowing down for my red box and overshot it. Lost 10 seconds finding it.

At this point I was now 18 seconds behind JPS, but still in 2nd place. It would ask a miracle to caught up now, but to my surprise, I was closing the gap slowly.

Then disaster again, I come around a fast corner and there is Tobias and Ricky in a cloud of tyre smoke, Tobias in the middle of the road. I try go through the gap left of him, but Tobias hits the gas peddle and drives where I was heading and takes my wheel off my car. Game over. Not happy feelings.

CU you all next time. Stay safe.

So sorry for you DJ but I was just trying to get off the track. I was sitting at the outward side of the corner pointing to the grass. I could hear a car approaching but I did expect it to try to get past on the inside so I hit the throttle. I could see you making that decision in the reply. Inside no , wont make it out side maybe, then I started rolling - Bang. I still think that we all did the right thing - apart from the me stupidly trying to overtake Teammate Ricky in that turn- sorry, mea culpa.

Apart from this I am quite ok with the race albeit I could have made more of it. After many training laps and honing the setup, I made it to a 3rd position in qualify rather close to my PB. Think this is the best I ever did. I could avoid trouble at the start and stay in 3rd position to about lap 10. Then my tyres got a bit too hot and after 2 smaller mistakes I had a few drivers in the rear mirror. That was too much of a pressure and I spinned in turn 3 hitting Dan. Dan that was entirely my fault. I then completely fucked up at the pit entrance overshooting the entry and then even hitting the wall having to use reverse gear. In the pits i was unsure about whether we even have the repair functionality? It did not repair anything and the possibility was disabled in the pit menu.

Rather eventless driving from there on until the situation above happened. Lost my front wing there and had to slow down a bit in the turns making the car go around the corner with the front brake. I could hold the position and finished 9th behind Ricky. Good race Ricky.
Best

dont know why but I seemed to have a mental block with this track , I couldnt drive it and I couldnt set the car up but somehow I got 3rd and looking at the overall race time if I had not spun out twice and damaged the car which forced my laptimes into the 12s I may have got a chance at the win , it appears this was very much a case of the tortoise and the hare type race .
Qually
I couldnt get better than 9th , I wrung the cars neck but the laptime just would not come , being realistic I was probably overdriving .
Race
Dropped the clutch but the car in front didnt move so had to stand on the brakes , fortunately no contact but this probably saved me from the carnage at turn 3 , approaching 3 it was a whiteout with smoke I couldnt see a thing so took the gamble that any cars or debris would be on the outside of the corner i slowed and went for the inside , the following cars took the opportunity to pass and ploughed into the wreckage so I was clear and on the tail of Dan .

I stayed this way for a couple of laps then decided to push but this resulted in a spin at the last corner , I slid into the wall fortunately with both tyres so damage was not too bad but I had horrendous flatspots , started to get back up to speed but then had brain fade on the braking to the complex and had to drive slowly over the big rumble strips which got me more damage , drove the car until my pitstop on lap 25 collected the pitwall on the way in as I bet a lot of folks did and elected not to repair .

The next stint was just surreal my car was slow and I was resigned to a finish around 10th, I came out in 8th by lap 27 I moved to 7th I then had an enjoyable battle with Dan until he spun out on lap 31 I was now 6th , lap 32 picked up 2 places due to pitstops was now 4th but I had Shannon charging up to me and I knew I wouldnt be able to fight him , lapped my teamie who then inadvertantly did an excellent job of holding Shannon up when they had a misunderstanding, on lap 38 I moved up to 3rd but I now had Dan Tani charging up to me , on lap 40 he pushed me down to 4th by lap 41 I was back up to 3rd but now had Andi bearing down on me on lap 43 he pushed me down to 4th but by lap 49 I was back up to 3rd , in that whole stint I only passed one car that was in front of me and thats only because he spun off .
Understeer - is when you hit the wall with the front of the car
Oversteer - is when you hit the wall with the back of the car
Horsepower - is how fast you hit the wall
Torque - is how far you move the wall when you hit it

For my part the qualification was very exciting, my last lap was very good but I made a mistake in the chicane, no idea if I could have had the pole but bravo DJC I like our battles in qualification.

I started on the side of the race line, so I had a good start by taking the lead but DJC did not let me go. I really pushed hard in the first stint and I think that DJ was a little faster than me, I couldn't run away from it. I had a little trouble taking the last chicane cleanly and I was a bit on the limit, I finally made a little mistake by going too wide on the sides and I thought that DJ would overtake me but unfortunately he spinned when dislodging.

It gave me a few seconds of margins but I had really worn my tires and the car became really oversteer in the big right turn, I thought DJC was going to catch me quickly.

I was able to hold on to my stop, but I came back in full traffic and it took me a little time to pass the cars which had not stopped. I think DJC had more work on this side because I was able to take myself a few seconds longer allowing me to lift my foot a little to preserve my tires and keep me some tire if I had to defend myself against DJC.

After the second stop I think DJC had problems because I was a lot ahead and despite a confusion with a car a lap behind which caused me to hang on with ED, I was able to bring the car back to the arrived as slowly as possible. Sorry for DJC , he had a good race and we had a great battle for victory but I think it was only postponed.

Concerning the championship it is tightening and I feel that battle with ED by the end will be interesting and exciting!

Hope to see you back on track.

I'd had quite a few issues with lapped vehicles not yielding to blue flags up to this point, so I was pretty bent out of shape after our little incident. I don't think we even touched, but I wasn't sure where you were going so I tried to brake and turn in late, which didn't go too well and I ended up high centered on the rumbly things in the chicane.

It then occurred to me that you yielded to the blue flag but only Coyne was in your line of sight, so as far as you were aware there was no one else behind you. No worries, it's just a limitation of racing deadly vehicles with no awareness of anything outside the view of our computer monitors Smile

It felt great to be back in the driver's seat in rF2 with a bunch of familiar faces.
When in doubt, pass out.

That was hard luck Shannon no way could i have held you off , you were way faster than me .

I was never a huge fan of Silverstone, whatever the shape or form, be it modern or old. I don’t know why, it has quick bends and corners flowing into each other, but it just never worked for me somehow.

The same thing here, I struggled for pure speed and could never get that proper feeling from the car. I was actually quite happy to achieve 5th position in Q and even happier when I made a very good getaway from the dirty side of the track.

It was tight through T1 and Ramon Bauer and I were side by side for T2 until disaster #1 struck. As he mentioned above, he just didn’t see me and moved across, causing us to slide off the track.

I was saved from the carnage and only had light damage, but my left front tyre was severely damaged. Throughout the first stint the tyre constantly overheated. On the straights it never went under 110 degrees and in the corners it went up to 140+, and there was nothing I could do. I struggled to make up positions. I was on a low downforce setup as well, which meant it was tricky to keep close enough to other cars throughout the corners for me to overtake on the straights. It took me several laps before I managed to take the appropriate lines to prevent understeering wide.

I was on softs with a 2-stop strategy and back into 3rd again for my first stop on lap 18. After DJ did his only pit stop later on, I was following him around, and even though we were on different strategies, I just pushed a bit too hard. And so disaster struck again. Before steering into T1 I hit the outside grass, the car steered itself into the wall and I had severe damage. Argh.

The first big mistake I have made this league...

A slow lap plus repairs of about a minute saw me back into 10th position. Valuable points being lost! Ouch...

I fought back to 6th position and with a bit more than 10 laps to go found myself behind the leader JP. With not much to gain unlapping myself, being more than 20s behind Dan in P5, I just decided to follow him to the finish and save myself the extra lap.

Unfortunately disaster didn't seem to end at this track. When JP was lapping Bruce in the chicane there was a bit of mixup and he had to take evasive action. I couldn’t avoid him anymore and just clipped his front, sending me into a spin. Luckily I didn't take out the race leader and we could go on our way again.

Again I had to overtake Shannon, who must have been getting tired of seeing me overtaking him only to be dropping down the order again all race already haha.

My front left tyre was pretty damaged again from the slide; severely overheating and now sending me sliding everywhere. Both JP and I took it really easy those final 10 laps to make it across the finish intact.

Well, this race was a bit of a disaster for me. Worst result so far, losing many points to JP. I am going to blame the lovely weather for this though Smile. We had a big BBQ here (in terms of food and wine, no company allowed in isolation of course), and that probably didn’t help my form.

I will need to up my game to keep myself ahead of JP in the standings! I seem to miss this bit of speed in qualifying, which always makes the race a real uphill struggle. Let's hope the next tracks fit my driving style a bit better again.

What can I say, after struggling with the setup throughout the buildup to the event, I did not have high hopes, but somehow, by not making big mistakes and many others falling by the wayside, I ended up in P2! The race was not super eventful, I just tried to keep my (slow) pace, not messing up the pitstops and being reasonably cautious with lapped cars.

Not a favourite track that, but I cannot complain, this is "splendid isolation" at its best.

See you all in the woods of Hockenheim!
