Accessibility of the servers
#1
One time again, last night, I spent 3 hours to get inside our 1979 championship server.
For countless times I got the dreary "Package not available" message.

I knew I had the track installed, as we had raced there countless times before but when I tried to find it in the 'Packages" inside game, all I could find was "sm_Silverstone_Legends_v1.4" . I subscribed and I unsubscribed many times with no result and then I looked inside single player mode and discovered that I had the right track so that part was ok.

Then I started checking about .rfmod, I knew I had it when I entered server 2 months ago at Kyalami, so it should be ok.
To check everything was right, I downloaded the .rfmod from France announcement, I placed it into my Packages folder at my game installation, I got the "do you want to replace this file whith this file blah blah" message, and as the files had the same name and same size, I didnt see any point in replacing the file.
After many tries I couldnt find my way in, I did the replacement.
To cut the story short, the .rfmod was not the same, it was v1.2 but I had no way to know that, as file title was the same.

Yes, I was away for some time, but still I had the knowledge to go around our site, which is not easy for the first time as is for all sites (maybe admins could do some tidying up there), go to Steam and find rFactor 2 Library (which for me is a monument of making simple things NASA stuff) and try to figure things out .

Imagine now somebody who wants a quick race with us, sees our server with cool stuff (1979 F1 cars, Silverstone 1975 GP) and no way to get in.
I bet that the guy will just pass, he is not going to spend his time configuring our site or Steam's nightmare, he will simply look for a place where everything will be downloaded automatically for him from the server.
Even if he has entered our server before sometime ago, like me, he is not going to spend 3 hours like me to figure out whats wrong.

Even if downloading stuff from the server takes a long time, I am absolutely sure that this is the way to go if we want to have a populated everyday server with new people, as it was at the first days of rFactor 2 ( I bet a lot of us remember how it was).
Even if the ability level of the people who entered was sometimes low, from these everyday races we met friends who stayed with us till now.

I will understand if what Im asking is not possible but I would like to know if there are valid reasons for it, or if our new admins are willing to do something about it.
Also I wish our community would participate in this discussion.

Good to see your face again, Nikos! Smile

rF2 is fatally flawed in the MP department. It seems the most common issue is that when workshop items are updated they are automatically installed for clients, but not on race servers.
It seems the only way for admins to keep servers current is to check the workshop constantly to check if mods have been updated? More trouble than most admins in the world have time to deal with, really.

Seems to me that a 100% stock content server would be a breath of fresh air.

Edit: Just tried to get on the Silverstone server. Missing package. I don't have time for this crap :p

Edit Edit: I originally downloaded the F1 link from the season announcement thread and it's an outdated version of the mod
When in doubt, pass out.

Do as I did Shannon:

I guess you already have the track?

Download .rfmod at http://www.mediafire.com/file/6pz2qc6ype...rfcmp/file (found at http://www.simracers4life.com/forum/index.php )
Place it at your Steam rFactor 2 instalation (/Programs/Steam/Steamapps/Common/rFactor 2/Packages) and replace any previous file.

Start game and go inside Content, there you will find SR4L_1979_LEAGUE* v1.2 (NOT SR4L_1979_LEAGUE* v1.11) at category (Type) Vehicle, install.
Go down and find 1979_ROUND9_UK at category Mod, install.
you should be ok to enter server, if not, go to https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/f...=561198766 , subscribe to the track and reenter game and all should be ok.

Good to see you again Shannon Smile

Thanks, Nikos
I saw in your earlier post that you downloaded the mod from the most recent event post. Grabbed it from there
When in doubt, pass out.

I feel your pain Nikos. I often get this. I'm sure it used to be that the required items where downloaded. Now they are not and one has to find them. Usually with League races there are links but for example I can't find the Nissan skyline 2000 GTR v0.3.0 anywhere. I allways thought it was just me who had trouble finding stuff.

I've set server 4 with the FULL 300MB+ MOD containing Silverstone + League Mod. You'll find download speeds are so slow you'll find it useless to use. In 5 minutes I only got 25MB downloaded.

For some reason I had subscribed to all the Japanese classics but not the Skyline. I have now but the version from the workshop is newer than the version on the server.

Even so, 2 new players joined us at the server last night.
We must keep trying attracting new people in our league at all costs.

Btw when you all see a new guy in, please treat him welcome, if possible treat him a nice setup Wink

Nobody was able to join our test Server which I just shut. Download speeds are way too slow.
One posible patch could be adding a header to the top our website containing download links to track/cars included in active servers. But in order to do so I need Paul's access to website source code.

Thanks for testing that out Gorka. I'd always wondered If including content in the package was a good or bad feature. Guess we know now Smile
