BT20 LEAGUE - ROUND 4 - SILVERSTONE - REPORTS
#1
Probably my best weekend ever in SR4L. Qualified 5th with a PB. First of the rest! Raced well and clean (mostly). Missed any early smash-ups. I was cruising in P3, holding off P4 Chris with a 1 sec gap. But about 5-6 laps in I had an unforced spin which dropped me back to P8. But I got my s*** together and continued on gaining a few spots as folks pitted. I somehow came out of my late stop in P3. Then at some point I glanced at the standings and saw myself in P2! Unheard of for me late in a race after pitting. I managed to hold off Chris again who was right on my butt for my best finish ever (at least when 3 or 4 of the big hitters are in the line up).

Second race I started P9 but with the big smash-up in T1 I came out in P4. Dueled with Daniel Tani for most of the race with him just ahead of me. He pitted first but then I came out of my pit stop a hundred yards ahead of him. He got by me but then we battles hard. I finally got by him on lap 15 for P3. Great racing! But it didn't last. All the while DC had been closing on us and he got by me on about lap 19. Great racing with everybody today! No Verstappen/Vettel crazy moves or blocks around me! Great pass DC for the position. Awesome control.

Just to know, did you have the no freeze trick on your rfactor2. To see if it works or not.

Qually

Did an ok lap but made a small error which impacts the lap times greatly here , qualified 4th

Race 1
Got a good start but got pushed off at first corner by Xavier in what was a racing incident (thanks for waiting Xavier), joined at the back of the field and slowly made my way up the order , pitted on lap 8 but it took 67seconds !!!! no damage to repair so god knows what was going on , in practice I was always 52 -55 seconds . Again started making places eventually getting into 3rd , Rick was ahead but not enough laps left to catch him .

Race 2

Got a good start and just managed to avoid the startline crash , Cmon guys how on earth do you have a crash Before a corner has even been turned , we have all been driving these long enough to know how to handle them .

Kept 1st until lap 7 when DJ got me , pitted on lap 8 for another 67 seconds !!!!!! , this cost me places

Came out behind Daniel slowly started to reel him in when Rik exited the pits and joined the fun , the 2 of them were battling so I decided to stay close but watch for any opportunity , Daniel clipped a curb and went off , I then had a very entertaining battle with Rick , he was better than me at getting the power down but I had him on braking and turn in , kept showing myself in his mirrors trying to force a mistake but he was driving well until he went a little wide at Club and presented me with an opportunity which I grabbed with both hands , this got me 3rd .

I have done Gorkas freeze mod and had no freeze near the end , but I did have a triple freeze / stutter midway in race 1 , race 2 was fine .
Understeer - is when you hit the wall with the front of the car
Oversteer - is when you hit the wall with the back of the car
Horsepower - is how fast you hit the wall
Torque - is how far you move the wall when you hit it

No freezes for me with the steam plugin disabled.
Qualified 6th, behind Rick, which would be the story for the race Smile
Chased Rick for P3 until his spin caught up both us, and dropped to 8th.
Damage to right front wheel caused me to drive with steering wheel at 2 o'clock position to go straight.
However, after a cautious lap to test the damage I found I could keep up the pace with a driving adjustment.
I kept driving like that for about 5-6 laps, hesitant to pit so that there would be no pit-sharing conflict with Tobias.
Pitted with only 10 seconds extra needed for the repair, which was awesome.
Came out of the pits behind Rick and we continued our battle for P3 for several more laps, until getting verstappen'd by P5 at stowe after he came out of the pits right behind Rick and myself.
Last lap almost became cannon fodder by an airborne Shannon who was the victim of Dan's freeze.
Ended up in 8th which I will take all considered.
At least I got to start P3 for R2, so I was all ready to go at it again!
Unfortunately that lasted all of 100 feet after getting torpedoed by P1 or P2 at the start.
Hobbled back to the pits with a 3+ minute repair waiting for me. Esc'd out of frustration.
Looking forward to Spa !!!!

No freezes for me during the races thanks to Gorka’s Steam plugin find. Gooooood stuff.

Qualied 12-ish. Which is fine because I prefer chasing vs being chased.

My teamie and I fought our way up through the ranks pretty quickly and had some GREAT battles with Tobias and a few of other drivers. Best battling I’ve been a part of for quite some time.

My apologies to Kris for not giving you quite enough space in the pit box. It looked like I was far enough over. Fortunately I wasn’t fixing damage so the wait was minimal.

On the final lap, I was about 2 seconds behind Dan and was gaining a little bit of time on him. I was pushing HARD to try to catch up. Praying for a mistake. Then Dan’s glitch/teleport/freeze happened and shot my car into the air, destroying it in the process. Dropped me from 6th or 7th to 11th. It looks friggin’ hilarious in the replay!

Oh, well. I haven’t been the victim of a technical glitch for a few seasons, so I just chalked it up to it being “my turn”. It didn’t take away from the fact that this was the funnest I’ve had racing in quite a while.

Race 2? UGH. Started toward the back and employed my new tactic of slowing to a complete stop during race start chaos rather than try to sneak through the carnage. Good choice because there was absolutely no hole through the mess ahead of me. Bad choice because I got rear ended and slammed into the wall. Got my damaged car on course, then was taken out again on turn 3.

I drove angry and barely in control for the next 10 laps hoping to either salvage some points or die in a fiery crash. Came into the pits, and Kris’ car was sitting in the pit box, where it had been for the last 6(?) laps, I believe (just checked. Only 2 laps. Non-issue). I sat there trying to figure out how to deal with this for a good 20 seconds, then he escaped out and I was finally able to pit. Ended up getting lapped even though I was running pretty consistent 1:27/28s.

Daniel carried the team this weekend with 2 great finishes. Way to go teamie!

I think that we really need to address the carnage at the start of the races. I think the problem is part aggression, part carelessness, part luck and part awareness limitations that plague sim racing. Maybe we need to try rolling starts if it hasn’t been tried already? I know that’s less realistic, but I’ll take that over spending 2 weeks preparing for a race only to be taken out before I even reach the starting line.

Regardless, I still had a very fun race day. Can’t wait for Belgium!
When in doubt, pass out.

Seems to me I have heard that before. Shannon it might have been me in race two that took you out. I had been damaged by the wreck in start of race and when I went into turn my car went berserk Sorry about that I did not think I was hurt that badly. Lots of bad stuff in race 2
Race 1 I was doing on until I went in pit and I guess DJ and I got crossed up on our pit plan but I tried to pit beside him and it did not work so I had to wait lost a few spots went from 9 to 12 but oh well.

I should have preface that with "As Tim said a few months ago..." Smile

I know that you're not an overly aggressive or careless driver, soI figured you had damage or lag or something when you spun me into the pillowy hay bales.
When in doubt, pass out.

In the dock again, very sorry. Let me atempt an explanation:

Very recently I learn that putting Power & Preload values as low as posible, is the proper way to setup this car because then, you are able to drive almost flat-out all the time, especially in fast tracks like this one. So I improve my control over throttle response.

On race 1, I manage to get P7 in lap 1 after usual dissorder, but then, I was hit twice by a gentleman driver who send me to the back of the race with no blink at all. I start a painful recovery and was P11 on last lap praying to stay that way, but somebody spun off and I got P10.

Start on P1 is a bit of a stress for me and not a fortunate situation. Anyway, I decided to do my best putting aside that I was on the "clean" side of the track with no rubber at all and with no training on starts with the new low values power setup, so I thought I can try as hard as possible and when green lights come on I put my foot to the bottom but when changed to 2 gear, car went crazy fast to the left without any opportunity to control. I was totally surprised with this reaction and felt very ashamed with the situation.

Now that you mention it, I had no freeze either for the first time in many races after doing Gorka's suggestion of disabling the SteamPlugin in the plugins/difficulty menu inside Options

This one started so well, during practice I was immediately comfortable in the car, driving smooth and confident in the brake zone. I even started to mess with the setup and extracted more pace and more confidence. I was going in the race feeling so good and mentally prepared not to fight for position or do dangerous stuff but instead just drive clean and smooth and collect the result.

Quali: I did not push too much but made a few mistakes and drifts but the low fuel load compensated for those and I managed to post a time equaling my PB, good enough for 3rd place. I already fell like a winner at that time.

Race 1: I went off the line in a very conservative manner, loosing a couple place and having to go back on the throttle after my initial braking for T1 because I was really too much conservative. Than even at low speed, my car did not turn-in at all (probably because I was too much on the throttle), I push wide a bit and interfered with Dave Coyne's line. I did not made contact, but I saw him spin in my mirror and assumed it was because he tried to avoid me or because I pushed him out of the track. I felt very bad and waited for him. After that I had a good few laps being patient before making a few easy pass on slower cars; until around lap 8 when coming out of bridge, JP Simard lost it, hit the wall and came back flying onto the track. I was followed by 2 other cars and did not made any crazy maneuver to avoid him, he was spinning and rolling in the air so he could not have done anything neither. The crash was brutal, wheels were lost, but I could limp to the pits, repair and finish last.

Race 2: Starting almost last, I went at walking pace trough the start/T1 train wreck. I quickly caught up to the back of JP Simard. I obviously had the better car and he was 2 sec off my pace , but still I could not get past him safely for 2 laps, after that Maciej caught up to me and we started to fight for the honors of passing JP first, this took 5 laps of intense side by side racing. My heart exploded a couple time but no contact was made. After that I had clean air, Maciej showing me the line and giving me tow in the straight, I was lapping as quick as in quali, in the deepest groove you can imagine. So deep of a groove that I forgot to pit; once I realized that, I tried to save fuel and coast to my box but I ended short by 10 meters and had to retire.

I had loads of fun and intense racing, unfortunately both races were too short and I screwed up Dave's first race. So still a lot of work to do on my side.
