Porsche 917 League - Round 3 - Osterreichring - Reports
#1
Quali: Super busy on track. On almost every hot lap after the outlap there's someone exiting the pits and not waiting. But that wasn't why I couldn't beat DH or DJC, they were just too damn fast. My turn in at the first part of Texaco was very reluctant throughout the sessions, but I benefitted from good stability braking into the chicane. (50:20 diff, preload 5)

Race1: 3rd on the grid, got a very good start and managed to take 1st place by turn 1. DH was quicker than me through Bosch so I had to go defensive but generally it was an uneventful and successful race. Finished 1st.

Race2: 10th on the grid, steadily through the first chicane then got a bit of a hunger on. Followed DJC for a bit and eventually passed him on the inside of Dr Tirok but soon after passing another car (Ramon?) I was too wide into Raiffeisenhügel, got onto the grass and speared back onto the track taking DJC out. Sorry! :-[ After pitting I was out in front of DH and about to lap Tobias but he had a tank slapper at Dr Tirok and straightened out right on the racing line and there was no avoiding. All part of racing ;D I did try to beat DH's fastest lap but couldn't do it. This race was a lot of fun but I apologise if I was too aggressive in places. Finished 4th.

For Road America I right foot braked. Kyalami and Osterreichring were left foot. For Belgium I'm thinking right foot again for more feel.

I had Problems with random multi-second freezes throughout the week and spent hours trying to fix them - to no avail. Note that on every freeze, time was NOT freezing, so all that increased my lap times. In qualy I got lucky with one freeze-free lap, earning me a 10th place on the grid.

The race was a disappointing affair, every time I overtook some cars, a freeze happened and I ended up behind those cars again. Add a few frustration-induced unforced errors here and there and I ended up 13th or so, I think last one on the lead lap.

In the interlude between races I manically tried to restart and get back in, but it was too late. Better for everyone I guess. So no result in Race 2. Fortunately teamy Ramon got a 4th and a 2nd, running like a machine as always.

After the whole experience, I simply reinstalled Windows (not too difficult in Windows 10, I learned), installed a fresh Steam and RFactor and wheel driver etc, etc, etc, ETC and lo and behold: All problems were gone. Everything is running super smooth, even with slightly higher gfx settings as before (left all at defaults).

Keeping my fingers crossed, I can now concentrate on crashing problems of the other variety in Spa66 [small]WHY NOT A MORE MODERN SPA, WHY WHY WHY?[/small]

Quali was OK, didn't want to push too hard or start too far forward.

Race 1 was pretty uneventful, a few minor freezes but all was ok.

Race 2. Not sure what happened here. I had a synch error on the starting grid, I was changing gear but the indicators said I was in neutral. There was a small kerfuffle at turn 1 which I did my best to avoid. I was very lightly tapped at the next corner which, strangely, resulted in rear damage. I had Tobias on the inside and the radar was indicating someone behind me so I couldn't brake hard and turn in behind him. Race over at that point. I took the grass, hit the wall hard, car hugely damaged at the front end but not showing as damaged in visuals. I suspect I wouldn't have survived the race anyhow as the digital gremlins were out to get me on this one.

Had a massive glitch when I went out and had to quit and rejoin , For some reason couldnt break into the 1.40s which I had been doing so had to settle for 4th on the grid .

Race 1

Got a good start and held position , was following DJ and was feeling comfortable with the pace , stayed that way for a few laps then DJ went wide and I got past , stayed this way until pitstop , I hit the button on my wheel but got no response , for some reason all my button settings had changed ,through messing around with this I didnt pay enough attention to pit speed and got a stop/go , left pit and did another lap and went to serve penalty but couldnt call and cancel pit to get pitbox , ended up going through another full pitstop so decided to retire and rest .

Race 2

Started next to last on the grid , made up a couple of places before the chicane and a few more after , over the next couple of laps pulled myself up to leading group behind Ed and DJ who were fighting hard , could see everyone struggling to pass the front runners , Ed made a mistake on the last corner which allowed me to get alongside on the striaght and into the chicane but I couldnt complete the pass , we traded a bit of paint but no harm was done .
I started to think an early pitstop may give me the undercut as I knew I could lap faster than we were going, on the next lap Ed and DJ tangled so I dived for the pit , came back out with a clear track in front so drove every lap like a qually lap, as the race progressed places came to me and I ended up 2nd way behind Dan but just in front of Ramon , my tyres were by this time a little sorry for themselves and I had to drive hard to keep Ramon out of my draft I think by this time I was more a rally driver than race driver as the car was for ever going sideways , Dan pitted and I got 1st which I held to the end , well pleased .
