1976 F1 Season - Round 16 Japan Fuji REPORTS
#7
Final race. I was determined to put in a good drive after disastrous results at Monza and Canada.

I never really managed the third sector with my tank of a March, but in qualifying a good lap came out of nowhere, which put me 3rd on the grid.

My start was good enough to pull ahead and take first place into T1.

Unfortunately my lead was short lived when Hedlund overshot the braking into the chicane, bumped me from behind and flipped me around. He kindly waited on the side of the road while I recovered, but unfortunately I was in 12th position.

I quickly started taking back positions by force. Ashamed to say literally in some cases... At the end of the straight Ricky Keene braked around the 200m mark, which I wasn't expecting at all. I tried to take evasive action, but being on the brakes already I couldn't swerve enough and I pushed him off. This is not the way I want to overtake Sad

My next victim was Dan Bayford, who made a small mistake going into T2 on the fourth lap. I almost rear-ended him on the exit, and with Daniel Tani right behind, I didn't dare to hit the brakes. Instead I took the runoff area and rejoined the track thinking Dan had seen me there. Looking at the replay, I fear Dan had no clue what hit him... I sent Dan in the direction of the wall, but luckily he didn't hit it and could continue on his way.

And luckily this was also the end of my carnage.

I stepped on it, and was able to overtake a lot of drivers on the main straight, as I was going for a lower wing setup than most. I found myself in 4th position before the pitstops, and gave it my all to catch up to the top 3. I was making up good ground, and was only half a straight behind near the end, but alas, I ran out of laps.

Very exciting race with the early prospect of winning the race, and then making my way through the pack. Although I am very sorry for hitting both Ricky and Dan in the process...

This was a great league, very well organised, with great - albeit very tricky - cars and great people to race with Smile

Looking forward to what's coming next.
